HOUSTON, Dec. 3, 2024 – Fresh off the unranked Michigan Wolverines’ upset win over No. 2 Ohio State, head coach Sherrone Moore has been selected as the Bear Bryant Awards Fan Favorite Coach of the Week presented by Accenture.
The fourth consecutive win in The Game for the Wolverines – the first time UM has won four straight against the Buckeyes since 1988-91 – may have been the most improbable in recent memory. Prior to Saturday’s game, Ohio State had only played with one possession in three games this season – wins over Nebraska and Penn State, and a one-point loss to now-top-ranked Oregon.
The Wolverines controlled the line of scrimmage and held Ohio State scoreless for the entire second half, using a strong running game to control the clock and take the lead for good with 45 seconds remaining on a field goal by Dominic Zvada.
Meanwhile, on the defensive side of the ball, the Wolverines’ defensive unit – which had allowed just 94 rushing yards per game all season – outperformed its season average by holding the Buckeyes to just 77 yards on the ground. Offensively, the Wolverines ran for 172 yards, led by a 116-yard performance by Kalel Mullings. The run game performance has been a bellwether in the series of late – the team that has won the rushing battle has won 23 straight.
The selection of Moore follows last week’s selection of Brent Venables, Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham, Georgia Tech’s Brent Key, Louisville’s Jeff Brohm, the co-selection of Texas A&M’s Mike Elko and Kennesaw State’s Brian Bohannon, Georgia’s Kirby Smart, Oregon’s Dan Lanning, Vanderbilt’s Clark Lea, Kentucky’s Mark Stoops, Tennessee’s Josh Heupel, and Washington State’s Jake Dickert. Continuing through the remainder of the regular season, the Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards will recognize a coach weekly for leading their team to an exceptional victory.
The American Heart Association, a global force for healthier lives for all, presents the Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Awards annually to celebrate excellence in coaching, to honor Coach Bryant’s legacy and to raise awareness and critical funds for their mission. The coaching legend died from a heart attack in 1983, just 28 days after his final victory and retirement.
