HOUSTON – After a thrilling 32-31 win by the No. 3 Oregon Ducks over the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning has been named the Bear Bryant Awards Fan Favorite Coach of the Week presented by Accenture. The Ducks’ win came in front of an Autzen Stadium-record crowd of 60,129.
The matchup between top-five teams – the first in Autzen Stadium history – featured five lead changes, with the Ducks coming from behind twice in the fourth quarter – culminating in the game-winning 19-yard field goal by Atticus Sappington with just under two minutes to play.
Dillon Gabriel threw for 341 yards and accounted for three touchdowns, Jordan James rushed for 115 yards and a score and Evan Stewart turned in seven receptions for 149 yards and a touchdown. Tysheem Johnson and Kobe Savage had eight tackles each to lead the UO defense, and Matayo Uiagalelei had two tackles for loss including a sack on Ohio State’s first play after a go-ahead field goal.
Oregon has now won two straight against the Buckeyes – the Ducks’ first two wins in the eleven-meeting all-time series between the two universities.
Lanning is the fifth winner of the 2024 season, following Vanderbilt’s Clark Lea, Kentucky’s Mark Stoops, Tennessee’s Josh Heupel, and Washington State’s Jake Dickert. Continuing through the remainder of the regular season, the Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards will recognize a coach weekly for leading their team to an exceptional victory.
The American Heart Association, a global force for healthier lives for all, presents the Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Awards annually to celebrate excellence in coaching, to honor Coach Bryant’s legacy and to raise awareness and critical funds for their mission. The coaching legend died from a heart attack in 1983, just 28 days after his final victory and retirement.
