HOUSTON – We are approaching the stretch run of the 2026 college football season, and for many coaches on the Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards Watch List, the margin for error has all but disappeared. Conference championship races are tightening from coast to coast, College Football Playoff positioning is beginning to crystallize, and several watch list coaches will face pivotal tests this weekend.
Here’s what we’re watching this weekend:
No. 1/1 Miami (7-0, 5-0 ACC) at North Carolina (4-3, 2-2 ACC) [ABC]
The Hurricanes have held their place among the nation’s elite throughout the season, and Mario Cristobal takes his team on the road this week looking to maintain momentum in the ACC race. Road trips to Chapel Hill are rarely easy, and North Carolina has the offensive firepower to challenge anyone. Miami’s ability to control the line of scrimmage and avoid a late-season stumble will be critical as the playoff picture begins to take shape. Miami snapped a two-week skid of consensus No. 1 teams falling to unranked opposition last week – and while the Tar Heels are coming off a tough loss at Syracuse, they plan to make an effort to make sure that trend resumes this weekend.
Virginia (4-4, 2-3 ACC) at No. 14/15 Wake Forest (6-1, 4-1 ACC) [ESPN2]
The first season under Jake Dickert has produced impressive results in Winston-Salem, and Wake Forest returns home looking to continue its climb in the ACC standings. Virginia enters with upset aspirations, but the Demon Deacons have consistently protected home field this season. Wake Forest’s defense has been the catalyst throughout the year and will again be called upon to set the tone Saturday.
No. 19/16 SMU (6-1, 4-1 ACC) at Syracuse (3-4, 1-4 ACC) [ESPN2]
Rhett Lashlee’s Mustangs continue to establish themselves as legitimate ACC contenders. A road victory at Syracuse would strengthen SMU’s conference championship credentials and keep the Mustangs firmly in the mix entering November. Syracuse presents a difficult environment, making this one of the more challenging remaining games on SMU’s schedule. This will be SMU’s first trip to Syracuse since 1932, and the Mustangs need a win here as they try to position themselves for a second ACC championship game appearance in three years.
No. 2/2 Ohio State (6-1, 4-0 Big Ten) at RV/No. 25 USC (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) [NBC]
One of the weekend’s marquee matchups features two watch list coaches under the bright lights. Ryan Day‘s Buckeyes travel west to face Lincoln Riley‘s Trojans in a game with significant Big Ten implications. Ohio State continues to pursue a conference title and playoff berth, while USC has an opportunity to secure one of its biggest victories of the season. Day has not yet committed to whether Luke Fahey or Tavien St. Clair will be under center, replacing Julian Sayin; while the Trojans will look to find their footing after a big loss to Wisconsin. After averaging just seven points against the Badgers, can USC rediscover its mojo against an uber-talented Buckeyes defense?
RV/RV Minnesota (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) at No. 4/4 Indiana (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) [CBS]
Few stories in college football have generated more attention than the sustained success of Curt Cignetti‘s Hoosiers. Indiana enters another important Big Ten contest looking to strengthen its position near the top of the standings. Minnesota has proven capable of challenging ranked opponents, and the Hoosiers will need another disciplined performance to continue their push toward Indianapolis. The Hoosiers’ offense has faced some challenges in games against Nebraska, Ohio State, and Michigan, and may need to rely on its defense to keep this a low-scoring contest.
Nevada (3-4) at No. 7/7 UCLA (7-0) [BTN]
In his first year in Westwood, Bob Chesney has UCLA firmly entrenched in the national conversation. The Bruins return home as favorites against Nevada and continue building one of the most impressive résumés in the country. UCLA’s defense has consistently delivered throughout the season and will look to create opportunities for the Bruins’ offense. UCLA has been all gas, no brakes thus far this year and will need to continue that momentum to avoid being tripped up with critical Big Ten matchups against Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, and USC on the horizon.
No. 25/RV Wisconsin (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) at RV/No. 24 Iowa (5-2, 2-2 Big Ten) [FOX]
The annual battle in Iowa City carries major significance for Kirk Ferentz‘s Hawkeyes. Iowa continues to rely on a familiar formula of physical defense, disciplined football and timely offense. Wisconsin arrives as an experienced Big Ten opponent, making this another critical test for a Hawkeye squad with conference aspirations. With manageable schedules in the Big Ten beyond this game, both teams could factor into the CFP hunt. The Hawkeyes have won four straight against the Badgers, outscoring Wisconsin 118-26 during that time; but both teams will be reliant on their defense in what could be a low-scoring affair.
No. 20/18 Northwestern (6-1, 3-1 Big Ten) at NR/RV Oregon (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) [Peacock]
David Braun‘s Wildcats have been one of the season’s more surprising success stories. Northwestern faces a difficult road trip to Eugene, where the Ducks remain one of the toughest opponents in the conference. A victory would further validate Northwestern’s remarkable rise and significantly strengthen Braun’s Coach of the Year résumé. Former Oregon coach Chip Kelly, in his first year as Northwestern’s offensive coordinator, has the Wildcats’ offense firing on all cylinders. The Ducks are an early favorite in what could be one of the closest games of the week.
No. 23/23 Missouri (5-2, 2-2 SEC) at Arkansas (3-4, 1-3 SEC) [SEC Network]
After remaining competitive throughout a challenging SEC schedule, Eli Drinkwitz‘s Tigers face another important conference test in Fayetteville. Missouri has consistently found ways to win close games this season and now looks to add another valuable road victory as the SEC race enters its defining stretch. The Tigers will need to bounce back from a disappointing loss against Ole Miss, while the Razorbacks will look to build on a desperately-needed win over Vanderbilt.
Auburn (4-3, 2-3 SEC) at Ole Miss (5-2, 3-2 SEC) [SEC Network]
The Rebels return home this week as Pete Golding looks to keep Ole Miss firmly in the SEC championship conversation. Auburn has shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season and presents a dangerous challenge. Ole Miss will rely on one of the conference’s most dynamic offenses to maintain pace near the top of the league standings. Both teams look to rebound after tough losses, and a critical matchup between Ole Miss’ dynamic offense and Auburn’s secondary could prove crucial. On the other side of the ball, Auburn’s run offense has shown the ability to rack up yards quickly – yet not consistently. The Tigers will need a strong effort on the ground to keep this game competitive.
Mississippi State (4-3, 2-3 SEC) at Texas (5-2, 2-2 SEC) [ESPN]
Following several pivotal SEC contests, Steve Sarkisian‘s Longhorns return home looking to continue building momentum. Texas remains firmly in the postseason discussion and cannot afford a misstep against a Mississippi State team eager to play spoiler. Consistency on both sides of the ball will be the focus for the Longhorns. The Bulldogs have dropped three straight since a 4-0 start, and will play without dynamic quarterback Kamario Taylor. Since Taylor’s injury, the Bulldogs offense has gone from 43.0 ppg to 12.7 ppg. Meanwhile, the Longhorns rebounded last week with an important win over Ole Miss, and will look to limit turnovers as the Longhorns look to make a case for the playoffs.
No. 22/21 Arizona (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) at No. 13/14 Texas Tech (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) [ESPN]
The spotlight shines on Lubbock as Joey McGuire‘s Red Raiders host an Arizona squad capable of making noise in the Big 12 race. Texas Tech has established itself among the conference contenders and understands the importance of protecting home field as November begins. In what may be one of the most evenly-matched games of the weekend, the Red Raiders are looking to step up their offensive effort against an Arizona team that has won five straight.
No. 24/RV Oklahoma State (5-2, 3-1 Big 12) at Iowa State (3-4, 1-3 Big 12) [FOX]
The first season in Stillwater under Eric Morris continues to exceed expectations. Oklahoma State heads to Ames for a matchup that could carry significant Big 12 implications. The Cowboys have displayed one of the conference’s most explosive offenses and will look to continue their strong play in a difficult road environment. One more win makes the Cowboys bowl eligible for the first time since 2023, and will keep OSU on pace with the rest of the Big 12 as Oklahoma State continues to contend for a berth in the Big 12 Championship game.
No. 6/5 Utah (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) at RV/RV Cincinnati (5-2, 2-2 Big 12) [ESPN]
Consistency has been the hallmark of the Utah program, and first-year coach Morgan Scalley has continued that trend in Salt Lake City. Utah enters another critical Big 12 matchup seeking to maintain its position near the top of the conference standings. Cincinnati’s home crowd presents a challenge, but the Utes continue to look every bit like a championship contender. Fresh off a home win over then-No. 8 Texas Tech – Utah’s highest-ranked home win since 2006 – the Utes bring the longest active win streak in FBS – 13 games – into Saturday’s matchup.
UConn (4-3) at Air Force (5-2) [MW+]
Troy Calhoun and the Falcons have quietly assembled another strong season. Air Force returns home looking to build upon a successful campaign and remain firmly in the conference race. As always, the Falcons’ rushing attack will be central to their success – Air Force’s rushing attack ranks second nationally, while UConn has struggled against the run this year, allowing 107.9 yards per game on the ground. With respect to Paul Revere, for Air Force, this game will be won if by land.
Texas State (4-3, 2-1 Pac 12) at No. 20/22 Boise State (6-1, 3-0 Pac-12) [CW]
Spencer Danielson’s Broncos continue their pursuit of another conference championship and national recognition among the Group of Six ranks. Boise State has been particularly strong at home this season and faces a Texas State team seeking a statement victory. The Broncos enter Saturday’s game on a six-game winning streak, but will be tasked with slowing down a high-octane Texas State offense that ranks 5th in FBS at 517.7 yards per game and 18th at 37.1 points per game. If Texas State’s offense can solve the Boise State defense, this game could be one of the sleepers of the week.
UTEP (1-6, 0-3 Mountain West) at North Dakota State (6-2, 3-2 Mountain West) [MW+]
The standard remains the standard in Fargo, where Tim Polasek has North Dakota State firmly in contention during its first season at the FBS level. The Bison return home looking to bounce back from a tough road setback at New Mexico and continue their push in the Mountain West race. UTEP arrives seeking a signature victory, but North Dakota State has been dominant at the Fargodome this season. Another home win would further strengthen the résumé of one of college football’s most storied programs under Polasek’s leadership. Even with questions around the availability of quarterback Nathan Hayes, who is listed as questionable after hurting his ankle last week, the Bison are 25-point favorites in this one.
New Mexico (6-1, 3-0 Mountain West) at San Jose State (4-4, 2-2 Mountain West) [MW+]
Coach Jason Eck and the Lobos head to California with an opportunity to strengthen their position in the conference race and continue one of the sport’s most remarkable stories. UNM looks for its first win in San Jose since 1969 – during that time, the Lobos are 0-8-1, with the lone tie coming in the 1971 season. The Lobos will look for a better outcome than last year’s matchup with SJSU that is widely viewed as the one game that kept UNM out of the Mountain West Championship.
No 5/6 Notre Dame (6-1) at Navy (2-5) [ABC]
The traditional rivalry returns as Marcus Freeman‘s Fighting Irish look to maintain momentum toward a potential playoff berth. After a tough loss, the Irish face a Navy team that has historically presented unique challenges. Notre Dame understands the importance of avoiding a late-season setback. While Navy brings the nation’s second-ranked rush attack into Saturday’s matchup, Notre Dame brings the third-best run defense in the country and has the secondary in place to keep Navy’s offensive attack honest. Over the last three years, Notre Dame has outscored Navy 142-27 and is a strong favorite in this matchup.
Army (5-2, 4-1 American) at Memphis (6-2, 3-1 American) [ESPNU]
In his first season leading the Tigers, Charles Huff has Memphis positioned for a strong finish. The Tigers welcome Army for a matchup featuring contrasting styles and significant conference implications. Memphis’ offense will be tested by the Black Knights’ physical approach and ball-control philosophy. While both teams do possess a strong run game, it is the Army rush offense that leads FBS with 345.7 yards per game this year. That matchup – against Memphis’ rush defense which ranks 103rd at 171.4 yards per game could prove critical.
Troy (3-4, 1-2 Sun Belt) at James Madison (7-1, 4-1 Sun Belt) [ESPN2]
Few teams have been as consistent this season as James Madison. Billy Napier’s Dukes return home looking to continue their march through the Sun Belt schedule. Troy presents another conference challenge, but James Madison has proven difficult to slow throughout the year. Both teams suffered difficult losses last week, but JMU brings an extremely potent offense into this rematch of the 2025 Sun Belt Conference championship game.
OTHER THINGS WE’RE WATCHING…
- SOUTH DAKOTA SHOWDOWN SERIES – Saturday’s matchup between No. 6 South Dakota and No. 5 South Dakota State is the oldest matchup in college football between two public universities in the same state that have a game titled “University of ___ vs. ___ State University.” SDSU announced its move to Division I in 2003 and became an active Division I member in 2008, and USD followed in 2006, formally joining Division I in 2012. This game will take place in Brookings – where USD is 0-6 since making that move to Division I.
- CALDER CITY CLASSIC – Top-ranked Ferris State brings a 38-game winning streak – the second-longest in Division II history (two victories short of the record of 40 set by Ferris State) into this weekend’s Calder City Classic against No. 9 Davenport. After a tough matchup against No. 12 Michigan Tech, Ferris looks to keep its all-time record perfect against Davenport – the Bulldogs have a 10-0 advantage in the all-time series. Despite that record, both Ferris and Davenport bring perfect 8-0 marks into Saturday’s matchup making it one to watch.
- PLAYOFFS ON THE LINE – No. 14 John Carroll goes on the road this weekend to No. 25 DePauw in a game that could spell the end of one team’s playoff hopes. Both teams enter Saturday’s tilt in Greencastle, Ind. with 6-1 marks.
- TOP OF THE MORNINGSIDE – No. 5 Morningside hits the road this weekend for a matchup with Midland, bringing a 7-1 record and a six-game winning streak. During that streak, the Mustangs have averaged 56 points per game and have outscored opponents 336-108.
