Five Games We’re Watching… and some things we watched

by | Oct 8, 2026 | news

We’re officially into the heart of conference play, and the stakes are beginning to rise. Undefeated teams are putting perfect records on the line, traditional rivals are renewing their annual battles, and some of the nation’s biggest brands face tests that could reshape the championship picture. Here are five games we’re watching and some things we’ll be watching for.

  1. Texas A&M (3-2, 1-2 SEC) at No. 14/16 Missouri (4-1, 1-1 SEC)

Texas A&M Game Notes | Mizzou Game Notes | Live Stats

An important SEC matchup takes center stage in Columbia this weekend as Mike Elko leads Texas A&M into a showdown with Eli Drinkwitz and No. 14/16 Missouri. While neither team enters undefeated, both remain very much in the hunt in the conference race and are looking to build momentum entering the heart of SEC play.

Missouri enters the contest coming off one of its most impressive performances of the season, a 45-17 victory over then-No. 8 Florida that vaulted the Tigers 11 spots in the AP Poll. Texas A&M, meanwhile, responded to back-to-back SEC losses by dominating Arkansas 34-7 last week.

The contrast in styles will be one of the game’s defining storylines. Missouri has developed into one of the SEC’s more balanced offenses, averaging 37.6 points per game while quarterback A. Simmons has thrown 13 touchdown passes through five contests. Texas A&M has leaned heavily on its defense, allowing just 18.6 points per game and ranking among the conference’s best units on third down.

Keep an eye on Missouri’s rushing attack against the Aggies’ front seven. The Tigers are averaging nearly 170 rushing yards per game, while Texas A&M has limited opponents to 121 rushing yards per contest. Whichever team wins the battle at the line of scrimmage could leave Columbia with a critical conference victory.

  1. North Carolina (2-2, 0-1 ACC) at No. 25/24 Pittsburgh (5-0, 2-0 ACC)

Carolina Game Notes | Pitt Game Notes | Live Stats

One of the ACC’s remaining unbeaten teams puts its perfect record on the line Saturday afternoon when Pat Narduzzi and Pittsburgh host Bill Belichick and North Carolina.

Pittsburgh enters the week ranked for the first time this season after surviving a 35-33 road victory over Virginia Tech. The Panthers have opened 5-0 behind one of the conference’s most explosive offenses, averaging 38.4 points and 478 yards per game.

North Carolina’s record may not jump off the page, but the Tar Heels have faced a difficult schedule that includes games against Clemson and No. 3 Notre Dame. Belichick’s squad showed flashes in a 37-26 loss to the Fighting Irish and will be looking for its first signature ACC victory of the season.

The game became even more intriguing after Pittsburgh lost starting quarterback Mason Heintschel to a season-ending injury. Veteran transfer Holden Geriner is expected to make his first start, creating uncertainty for a Panthers offense that has thrown 14 touchdown passes through five games.

Pittsburgh owns a plus-five turnover margin and has allowed just 13.4 points per game. If the Panthers continue to protect the football and get efficient quarterback play, they can remain undefeated. But if North Carolina can generate pressure and force mistakes, the Tar Heels could spoil Pitt’s unbeaten season.

  1. No. 1/1 Texas (4-0, 1-0 SEC) vs. Oklahoma (2-2, 0-1 SEC)

Texas Game Notes | Oklahoma Game Notes | Live Stats

Few games in college football carry the tradition, intensity, and national attention of the Red River Rivalry, and this year’s edition arrives with Texas ranked No. 1 in both major polls. Steve Sarkisian leads the unbeaten Longhorns into Dallas against Brent Venables and Oklahoma.

Texas has put together one of the nation’s strongest résumés through the season’s first month. The Longhorns opened with victories over Texas State, then-No. 1 Ohio State, UTSA, and Tennessee, earning the top spot in both polls.

Oklahoma’s path has been significantly more turbulent. The Sooners enter 2-2, having suffered losses at Michigan and Georgia, but rivalry games often ignore records and rankings. Texas has learned that lesson many times in this series.

The Longhorns have won with balance, defense, and situational execution, while Oklahoma will look to rely on a defense capable of creating havoc and shortening the game. The Sooners know they cannot allow the explosive plays that have powered Texas through the first four weeks.

This rivalry has produced its share of upsets, but for Texas the challenge is straightforward: avoid the emotional traps that often accompany this game and continue a march toward a potential SEC Championship appearance. For Oklahoma, a win would instantly reshape its season.

  1. No. 21/22 UCLA (4-0, 2-0 Big Ten) at No. 13/13 Oregon (3-1, 1-1 Big Ten)

UCLA Game Notes | Oregon Game Notes | Live Stats

One of the most intriguing games on the Big Ten schedule takes place in Eugene as Bob Chesney brings unbeaten UCLA to face Dan Lanning and No. 13 Oregon. The matchup features two of the nation’s highest-scoring offenses and could have major conference championship implications.

UCLA has been one of the country’s early surprise teams, racing to a 4-0 start while averaging nearly 45 points per game. The Bruins have relied on a dominant rushing attack led by Wayne Knight, who has rushed for 445 yards and nine touchdowns through four games.

Oregon’s offense has been just as explosive. The Ducks are averaging 47.5 points per game and rank among the national leaders in passing offense. However, a storyline to watch is quarterback Dante Moore, who remains unavailable this week, forcing Oregon to turn elsewhere under center.

The all-time series is remarkably close, with UCLA holding a narrow 40-33 advantage. Saturday marks the first meeting between the programs as Big Ten rivals with both teams ranked in the national polls.

UCLA’s rushing offense ranks among the best in the nation, while Oregon’s passing game presents a significant challenge for a Bruins defense that has been solid but largely untested against elite offensive talent. Which side dictates tempo may ultimately determine the outcome under the lights at Autzen Stadium.

  1. No. 2/2 Georgia (5-0, 3-0 SEC) at No. 6/7 Alabama (5-0, 3-0 SEC)

Georgia Game Notes | Alabama Game Notes | Live Stats

It doesn’t get much bigger than this.

Two undefeated SEC powers meet Saturday night when Kirby Smart brings No. 2 Georgia to Tuscaloosa for a showdown with Kalen DeBoer and No. 6 Alabama. Both teams enter 5-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play, making this one of the biggest games of the 2026 season to date.

While both programs are loaded with talent, their similarities are striking. Georgia ranks first nationally in scoring offense at 51.4 points per game, while Alabama sits second at 49.6. Defensively, Georgia allows just 13.4 points per contest and Alabama allows 20.8.

The quarterback matchup is among the nation’s best. Georgia’s Gunner Stockton enters the week ranked among the national leaders in passing efficiency, while Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell has directed an offense that continues to generate explosive plays at every level of the field.

History is never far from the surface when these two programs meet. Alabama owns a 45-27-4 advantage in the all-time series, but Georgia won the last meeting 28-7 in the SEC Championship Game. Saturday gives Alabama an opportunity to defend home turf while Georgia seeks another statement victory against an elite opponent.

Ultimately, this matchup may come down to turnovers. Georgia enters with a +6 turnover margin, while Alabama leads the nation with a +7 margin. In a game where opportunities could be scarce, protecting the football may be the difference between victory and defeat.

Other Things To Watch.. And Some Things We Watched

  • TOP-10 TILT IN CLARKSVILLE – One of the biggest games in the FCS this weekend takes place in Clarksville, Tennessee, where undefeated Tarleton State (5-0) travels to face Austin Peay (5-1) in a matchup that has been circled since the Texans’ dramatic 45-44 victory over the Governors last November. Tarleton enters riding a five-game winning streak and coming off an FBS road win at Bowling Green, while Austin Peay has won four straight since its season-opening loss to Vanderbilt. With both programs viewed as contenders in the United Athletic Conference race, Saturday’s showdown could go a long way toward determining the league favorite and strengthening a postseason résumé.
  • BATTLE IN THE GLIAC – One of the best games in Division II this weekend takes place in Allendale, Michigan, where No. 6 Grand Valley State (5-0) hosts No. 19 Michigan Tech (4-1) in a matchup with major conference and playoff implications. The Lakers have once again emerged as a national contender and sit among the top teams in Division II, while the Huskies arrive with one of the GLIAC’s toughest defenses and an opportunity to earn a program-defining road victory. Michigan Tech hasn’t beaten Grand Valley State since 2018, but a win Saturday would instantly elevate the Huskies’ postseason résumé and shake up the Division II landscape.
  • ANOTHER ROAD TEST FOR THE WARHAWKS – The road doesn’t get any easier for No. 5 UW-Whitewater this weekend. Fresh off a top-10 victory over UW-River Falls, the unbeaten Warhawks head to La Crosse for another pivotal WIAC showdown against a traditionally tough UW-La Crosse program. Whitewater has already proven it can win big games, but surviving the weekly grind of the WIAC is a different challenge altogether. With conference title implications beginning to take shape and every week feeling like a playoff game in one of Division III’s toughest leagues, this is another measuring-stick opportunity for a Warhawks team with championship aspirations.
  • SEPARATION SEASON IN THE NAIA – Two ranked matchups headline the NAIA slate this weekend, beginning with No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan taking its unbeaten 5-0 record on the road to face No. 10 Marian. It’s one of the biggest games of the season to date and a matchup that could have a major impact on both the conference race and the national playoff picture. Elsewhere, No. 22 Georgetown heads to No. 11 Lindsey Wilson in another game with postseason implications, as both programs look to strengthen their résumés entering the heart of October. With rankings, conference positioning, and playoff seeding beginning to matter more each week, these are the types of games that start separating contenders from everyone else.
